Brandon here, your resident Mos Labs enthusiast and story writer of Black Dime Cabaret. I should really try to post updates here more often — it’s been a good time for the band and a lot of exciting things are in the pipeline. I wanted to update you on the next Black Dime Cabaret novel.
While currently untitled (I am terrible at naming books), the next novel in the Black Dime Cabaret universe is set sixty-five years before the events of Act I: Nefarious Schemes to Murder Lady Midnight, and explores the turbulent lives of the remaining Lucien family members as they fight, squabble and connive while cleaning up the mess left by Edgar Lucien following his death.
It has certainly been a tricky book! While originally planned to be another short novella (like Act I), the more I unravelled the dark histories of these characters and as the heart of the story took shape, I recently decided to expand it into something a little closer to Reflections of Fontaine. This usually happens with me. Even going back to my early days of writing epic fantasy tomes and space operas, I have always had a habit of drafting on the shorter side and expanding from there. These days I tend to give myself more flexibility to see where the story takes me, so it happens to a greater extent – whereas even four years ago, I would seldom progress through a chapter without the most sturdy of outlines.
But this is all to say, I am roughly halfway through the novel and am hoping (fingers crossed) to have a first draft completed by mid-December and release in the first half of 2024. Of course… I will be immediately transitioning to writing the Act II book following that.
So that’s it for this update.
