We are excited to present a brand new single set in the Black Dime Cabaret universe. “Knock Knock” is the horrific love story between a man and a house, set during Christmas. It is the birth of a frightening “Universal Monsters”-inspired antagonist who I’m thrilled to welcome into the fold. The song will be released digitally on our store on December 25, and streaming on December 29.
Although certainly a departure from our previous music, “Knock Knock” let us approach the Black Dime Cabaret universe from a different angle and tell a smaller, fast-paced story. I conceptualised the story with Caitlyn during a walk and subsequently wrote the song in the space of a few hours, which gave it a structural simplicity and sense of pace that our work on Act I sort of avoids. It’s not that we’re trying to do something more commercially-appealing or “listenable,” but rather approaching a Black Dime Cabaret song from the perspective of finding a more mainstream “version” of the band. In many ways, it was an experiment. We made a conscious attempt to produce as much of the song ourselves as possible, and at a manageable budget. It was a good learning experience for the future Act II sessions.
“Knock Knock” was written by Brandon Young with music performed by Black Dime Cabaret. Drums, guitars and bass were recorded at Electric Recording Lab by Scott Watkins. Vocals were engineered by Brandon Young, Caitlyn Adshead and Patrick Ng. It was mixed and mastered by Brandon Young. A special thanks to our absolutely wonderful cover artist, @chloe.ogs.
